Carlsson took up the guitar and began writing his own songs at an early age. He grew up in Karlstad where he played in a variety of bands in the 1980s. His debut album was with the group Vita Vivendo in 1986; in the previous year he published his first book of poetry at the tender age of 18. He has authored both poetry and prose, and debuted as a spokenword poet at the Hultsfred Festival in 1988. His first novel, Filip, was published in 2009.

The musician and songwriter Rolf Carlsson has released eight albums of his own music and lyrics. In collaboration with Johannes Holmquist, he released a collection of Ferlin songs  in 1996, and the following year he released his first solo album. He participated in the Swedish try-outs for the Eurovision song contest in 2002. His album “Kyssar och Guld” consists of his own translations of greats such as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, David Byrne and the Pretenders. One of the most popular songs from the album is “Det är du”(It´s you), which Carlsson sings in a duet with Idde Schultz.
